Meet the Escape Owners…Wallops Wood Cottages Hampshire

In our latest ‘Meet the Escape Owners’ journal post we’re delighted to introduce you to Andrew and Katherine, owners of a beautiful collection of luxury cottages in the South Downs National Park, Hampshire.

Can you tell us a little about you and the name of your escapes?

We are Andrew and Katherine Graham and we own Wallops Wood Cottages. We welcomed our first guests to Wallops Wood in 2014 after converting our redundant farm buildings into accessible-friendly self catering cottages.

Can you tell us a little more about your escapes?

We have 10 ‘lodge style’ level access cottages which sleep 4, 6, 8 or 10 people, seven have wet-rooms and are accessible for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility.

The cottages have open-plan sitting/dining areas with kitchen, woodburner stoves, and enclosed gardens for pets. All bedrooms are en-suite and profiling beds and hoists are available to hire (other equipment can be booked free of charge). We also have an accessible swimming pool and jacuzzi.

We’re in the South Downs National Park, between Winchester, Portsmouth and Petersfield with great views either across the Meon Valley or in a woodland setting on our two sites.

 

What inspired you to ensure your escapes were accessible?

A chance suggestion from a Visit England assessor prompted us to look into the adaptations we needed. By making a few tweaks to the layouts we found we had all the fundamental requirements already; so we took a close look and decided that accessible accommodation would be one of our key offerings to guests.

 

What is unique about your escapes?

Hopefully, a home from home; comfortable, spacious, practical and able to cater for most accessible needs without looking clinical.

We have an indoor pool and jacuzzi with a hoist that is wheelchair accessible. And you can bring your dog and extended family to enjoy time together!

 

Do you have a favourite local accessible café, restaurant or pub?

We’re usually quite careful not to divulge our favourites, not wanting to upset the other cafés, restaurants and pubs in the area!

But since you ask, we have to say that our favourite pub is The Shoe at Exton who have won multiple awards for their food. In the summer months you can sit outside in the lovely garden listening to the babbling River Meon as it makes its way through the stunning Meon Valley.

The delicious bread we provide in our welcome hamper is baked daily in the pub and often guests will buy more to take home with them! A list of accessible attractions is available online, after booking or in our comprehensive guide in the cottage.

For fine dining, we highly recommend the Vineyard Restaurant at nearby Hambledon Wine Estate. Just a few minutes away from Wallops Wood, with exceptional English sparkling wines produced on the estate and perfect for sampling food from a menu crafted from delicious local produce.

Can you recommend any local accessible attractions or activities?

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard has something for everyone to enjoy. Fascinating naval history is brought to life when exploring Nelson’s HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, The Mary Rose as well as a tour of Portsmouth Harbour.

Multi-sensory kit bags are available and there are interactive activities throughout the site. It’s a great day out and only half an hour from Wallops Wood.

The best part about welcoming guests to your accessible escapes?

The satisfaction comes from being able to provide that ‘home from home’ for many guests. The messages and reviews are often very gratifying.

Guests, their family members and carers, can be relieved to have discovered a suitable, comfortable place to enable everyone to relax and enjoy quality time together.
