meet the escape owners…Burlton Cottages and spa shropshire

In the next instalment in our popular ‘Meet the Escape Owner’ journal series, we’d love to introduce you to Rachel and Gerry, owners of accessible escape Barn Owl View at Burlton Cottages and Spa in Shropshire!

Can you tell us a little about you and the name of your escape?

Gerry and I own and manage Burlton Cottages and Spa which is located north of Shrewsbury in Shropshire. We have four holiday cottages, one of which is accessible (Barn Owl View) rated M3i and 5 Star Gold awarded by Visit England. Our business is now in its 10th year and we still absolutely love welcoming guests here to share our farm and rural surroundings.

Can you tell us a little more about your escape?

In total we can accommodate fourteen people across four properties. Our accessible property Barn Owl View sleeps 6 people in three en-suite bedrooms. It has many luxury features such as an electronically operated moveable worktop, hob and cupboards in the kitchen, and large wet-room. We also have many pieces of disability equipment that can be borrowed during your stay to save you on car space whilst travelling! The bespoke handmade headboards also create a luxury feel in the property.

We are in a rural setting, with a great village pub. We are dog friendly in three properties too.

What inspired you to ensure your escape was accessible?

Barn Owl View, our accessible property, was designed from the start to be accessible. This was a priority for the property, knowing that we wanted to accommodate everyone here at Burlton.

What is unique about your escape?

We have a swimming pool and Spa facility which is for the use of holiday cottage guests only. Each cottage has two hours exclusive use of the pool each day, so you won’t need to share your time with any other guests whilst in the pool. This is great for the less confident or anxious swimmer. The spa has a large wheelchair-accessible wet-room with step-free shower, wheel-under washbasin, and grab-rails.

Do you have a favourite local accessible café, restaurant or pub?

The local pub which is a five minute walk away via footpaths is accessibly friendly and serves great food. They tend to have special offers on during the week too. https://theburlton.co.uk/

Can you recommend any local accessible attractions or activities?

Locally guests enjoy Blists Hill Victorian Town at Ironbridge or the myriad of museums, castles and market towns in the county.  https://www.ironbridge.org.uk/plan/access-information/

The best part about welcoming guests to your accessible escape?

Watching guests arrive and truly unwind during their stay is a highlight of what we do here. Many guests return time and time again, there really is no better compliment than that.
