meet the escape owners – oak tree cabin devon

Can you tell us a little about you and the name of your escape?

Hello! We are Andrew and Claire the owners of Oak Tree Cabin which we built as a holiday let and had our first guests staying in 2024! Andrew grew up in South Devon and it has been a fantastic place for our own children to grow up.

We love the outdoors, so have spent a lot of our family time, in the sea, at the beach or walking or cycling on Dartmoor. We have always wanted to share how special this coastal area is with others and we are so happy Oak Tree Cabin is now up and running so our guests can come and see too!

Can you tell us a little more about your escape?

Oak Tree Cabin is nestled in its own garden alongside fields and rolling Devon hills. The living area and outside decked area enable guests to relax, unwind and soak up the views. There are often sheep grazing in the neighbouring fields and it is not uncommon to see deer, birds of prey, rabbits and this year we have had a Barn Owl who regularly makes an appearance in the morning or late afternoon.

The Cabin sleeps 2 people (studio accommodation), is all on one level, and has a wet-room and accessible kitchen. The living room also a log burner, which is perfect during the cooler months for cosy afternoons and evenings in front of the fire!

It is in a great location for getting out and about and is close to local beaches and countryside or for enjoying hospitality and exploring Kingsbridge, Totnes, Salcombe and Dartmouth and all the surrounding villages.

What inspired you to ensure your escape was accessible?

Whilst we have always wanted to do something like this, it was a friend that highlighted how challenging it was to find suitable accessible self catering accommodation for holidays. That really made us think about how we could design our cabin so that it would be much more accessible to everyone.

What is unique about your escape?

I think the location and the cabin itself. It allows guests to feel connected to the outdoors, whilst still having the facilities that make life a bit easier!

Do you have a favourite local accessible café, restaurant or pub?

We have some lovely restaurants locally and I would probably suggest different ones and different times of year. But I think the Oyster Shack, Bigbury and the Crabshell, Kingsbridge are a good choice.

Oh, and for a daytime café, the Ring Feeder is fab – it has a great rustic farm feel and delicious wholesome food.

Can you recommend any local accessible attractions or activities?

We have put quite a bit of information into our welcome pack for activities. These range from outdoor activities, like accessible walks on parts of the South West Coastal Parth and Dartmoor, to surfing at our local surf school at Bigbury on Sea, visits to a local vineyard and some great accessible attractions in Plymouth.

There is plenty to do even in the autumn and winter months.

What is the best part about welcoming guests to your accessible escape?

I love getting it ready and making sure everything is in place. However, I guess the best thing is having feedback that guests have had a great time and the cabin has had everything they needed and more for their stay. You can’t really beat that – we wanted to share our bit of Devon and to hear that others have loved it too, is wonderful.
