on holiday with…us! Castle chase cottages, rutland
We recently had a wonderful stay at The Old Stables at Castle Chase Cottages in the pretty village of Ayston in Rutland. Owner Sarah and family kindly invited us to visit so we could view all 3 cottages at Castle Chase and explore the surrounding areas.
We stayed in The Old Stables, a luxury single-storey cottage with three spacious bedrooms (one with large en-suite shower room) and a stylish accessible bathroom with walk-in shower. The images of the cottage really don’t prepare you for how beautiful the cottage is, it was a ‘Wow’ from us all when we walked in.
The cottage has a spacious open-plan living/dining/kitchen space and is all completely level and threshold free, ideal for our little wobbler. We arrived just after dark and were so glad of the warm and cosy feel to the cottage and corner wood-burner.
Arriving in the dark meant we had the pleasure of waking up in the morning and being surprised by the wonderful panoramic views!
After a week of illness we were hoping for rest and relaxation, and that was very easily achieved in the super cosy cottage with comfortable living room and beautiful views over the surrounding parkland.

The kitchen was extremely well equipped, perfect for whipping up snacks at home and enjoying the lovely welcome pack!
After a debate over the bedrooms everyone was happy to head for bed…The Old Stables has a very large master bedroom with beautiful countryside views and a spacious en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower, ‘The Blue Bedroom’ has a king-size electric adjustable bed, and ‘The Pink Room’ has super-king/twin beds.
We all slept so well, a combination of exquisite mattresses and total peace and quiet! It was lovely to wake up in the mornings and be able to view the countryside through the doors in each bedroom.
The bathroom is always a key feature for us when heading off on an accessible escape, we need an accessible shower, grab-rails, and shower chair. When confirming our booking for The Old Stables it was great to be able to request the accessibility equipment we required in the guest portal, this was then waiting for us on arrival.
The accessible family bathroom worked well for us with walk-in shower, fixed grab-rails, split-screen shower door (brilliant for carer), comfort height WC, and height-adjustable washbasin with integrated handles (a selection of shower chairs are also available on request). If you require a completely step-free shower, The Hay Barn has recently been added to the Castle Chase collection and has a spacious wet-room (links to all listings below).
We’ve been lucky to visit Rutland and the areas around Uppingham and Oakham before as we have friends in the area, but it was our first time exploring local spots with accessibility in mind.
Castle Chase is 5 minutes drive from the charming market town of Uppingham with local amenities, shops, cafes and restaurants, and a quaint high street to explore.
We also paid a return visit to the beautiful Rutland Water which is set in 4,200 acres of open countryside and boasts numerous walking/cycling routes, two cafes overlooking the water, Watersports Centre, and peaceful nature reserve. It was fantastic to see that Rutland Water also now has two Changing Places facilities at both main car parks.
We parked in the Normanton Park car park (plenty of blue badge spaces) and took a short walk along an accessible pathway to the iconic Normanton Church which has level concrete path access and a ramp to enter the church.
We followed this with hot drinks (and cheesy chips!) at the accessible and dog-friendly Waterside Cafe with beautiful views across the water.
We had a lovely weekend at Castle Chase and would recommend a visit to these beautiful accessible and dog-friendly cottages (all with panoramic countryside and parkland views) which provide a wonderful base for exploring the many attractions around the hidden gem of Rutland!
